A “bindi” is a red dot which is placed between the eyebrows on the forehead which is one of the most widely known body embellishment mainly worn by the Hindus and the Jains women in the world, mostly in India. Besides the gold, jewellery, saris which distinguishes much of the Indian`s culture, bindi is also among them.

“Bindi” is taken from Sanskrit which was first known as “bindu”. "Bindu" meant “a drop”. Due to the use of various languages used across India to convey messages or to commute with people, the word bindi also has other names used across India such as teep, Kumkum, tikli, sindoor and bottu. Even though there are different names for it, the meaning and the purpose of the bindi remains the same.
The ancient seers of Hinduism had described the areas of concentrated energy on the body in Vedas. The energy was known as the chakras. There were precisely seven chakras in our body which is present in the centre of the whole body. The sixth among the seven chakras is actually exactly where the bindi is placedon our forehead. When the human body sees something or dreams about it, then it is also seen by the “ajna”.

The “ajna” is the intellect or eye intuition. People thus wear bindi because it enhances the powers of the chakra by facilitating one`s inner wisdom and knowledge and allowing them to perceive and interpret things in an unbiased and truthful manner. It also helps in abandoning of their ego and wrong habits.
The presence of the third inner eye has been known in the Hindu tradition for a long time. The purpose of the inner eye is to focus on the God and the rest two physical eye is to see the outside world. Just like the inner eye, the bindi or the dot portrays obedience. It also serves as a constant reminder of one`s thought to keep the God at the center of importance.

The bindi worn in India is usually red in colour which serves as a holy and auspicious sign of marriage. The red bindi is believed to bring in wealth and prosperity when the bride steps in the new house of her husband as the family newest guardian. A widow wears a black bindi on her forehead and not a red one as it is no longer associated with marriage.
Nowadays the bindi does not strictly symbolizes the spiritual and the auspicious sign but also has become a fashion statement. Bindis are now available in different shapes, sizes and colour and are usually used as an accessory in beauty. Many Hollywood celebrity has also been wearing Bindi as a new fashion statement. It is now a new way to embrace the Indian culture all over the world, but there are still some who criticizes this as an act for breaking the culture of the bindi wearing tradition.
In this blog, I have shared some view on ‘bindi’ which is also sometimes worn as a decorative purpose or a fashion statement without any religious significance. At the same time, it represents prosperity, love and honour.
